The "Honu"

While shooting one day on-location, we had a little visitor! That was the first time my husband and I had seen a turtle up close and personal. He decided to take a little nap on the sand, right before our photo shoot! The experience was surreal, and we left that day in awe and admiration at how much beauty this island holds! :)

"Honu" in Hawaiian means Turtle. We were definitely surprised, and felt a sense of blessing.

Trying to fight it...

Getting sleepy...

Nap time!

2011: New Year Resolutions

Year 2011 Resolutions/Goals:

1) Shoot More. Going to try to make it a habit to bring our camera more often, so we can shoot more.

2) New Business Cards. Our old business cards all have a 2010 calendar on it!
Those need to go! Looking forward to designing new business cards.

3) Learn New Lighting/Editing Techniques. We love to learn new techniques and we have so much
equipment that we've yet to try out. Looking forward to utilizing our
strobe lights more this year for some of our new projects!

4) Revamp Packages. Going to work on new package rates and info and stick with them.

5) Boutique Packaging. We've already started using boutique packaging,
but would love to add more color & personalization to our packages.

6) Start a Year-long Project. Although we may not have time to participate in the 365 Project,
we would like to do a variation of it, maybe a 12-month project, showcasing more
of our personal, still, and landscape photography.

7) Local Models. Would love to work with more local models here on Oahu,
on some glamour/pin-up/vintage conceptual themes!
We love vintage, and had a couple of projects in mind that we would like to bring to life!

8) Blog more. That goes hand-in-hand with shoot more!
As soon as we shoot more, we'll be able to post more!

9) Charity Work. Would love to volunteer our photography talent to help a good cause, if there are any
local charities out there that would like to document your event, please feel free to contact us!
We would love to be a part of a local organization that gives back to the community!
Contact us at: sabellaphotography@gmail.com

We have a lot cut out for us, but looking forward to accomplishing these goals!
Happy 2011 everyone! What's on your New Year's Resolution?

North Shore, Hawaii

I am amazed how much we take for granted. I forget that we do live in Hawaii! Here are some photos I snapped from our quick trip to North Shore. Our first stop was North Shore's most popular shave ice store, Matsumotos! We waited in that long line to get our delicious island treats! Some of the local style syrup flavors included: Pineapple, Lilikoi, Guava, Coconut, Li Hing Mui, Honey Dew Melon, Watermelon! With a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and topped with condensed milk!!! LOVE!

Next stop, Haleiwa.. We had picked up some local food at a nearby grocery store and had a nice, relaxing picnic with our family at Haleiwa Beach Park. Among our local delectables were: kimchee tako & fish poke, rice, and huli huli chicken... we enjoyed our mini trip up to that side of the island.

Haleiwa Beach, Hawaii

The most popular place on the island to get the "best" shave ice.

The line; so maybe it wasn't as long as I thought..

All in the Little Details: Engagement + Wedding Photography

We've booked our first wedding session! Thought I'd share some sample "engagement + wedding" type of shots I've taken recently. I was so inspired that I was up all night last night determined to perfect our editing style to cater to just engagement & wedding photography.

Hope you enjoy this sneak peek, looking forward to catering to more of this type of clientele in the near future. :)

My Story: Autumn in Hawaii

How does Autumn look in Hawaii?

It looks a little something like this...

Growing up on an island all my life, I was always spoiled with the lovely, warm "island weather." All I ever knew was the droplets of rain on my face, endless year-round sunshine, & rainbows! As a little girl, I had no notion of "Fall" & "Winter" and never knew a hint of cold, nor have I ever experience the childhood wonders of making a snow angel as Christmastime came around, signifying the end of Fall and the beginning of winter. You could always sense when Autumn, or Fall, was just around the corner, as the gray monsoon clouds would roar overhead, and engulf what little bursts of sunshine our tiny island had left. The rain would pour, and as it came down, I always thought it sounded like that odd static sound a television would make when it had lost it's signal. I never really liked the sound of rain, yet there was something special about Autumn time, that I've always loved. I loved that precise moment when the rain has been lifted, when all those gray clouds wander off into oblivion. It is a special moment. The moment you step foot outside your porch, and you're wrapped in a blanket of freshness, and that fragrance infused in the air.. a hint of freshly cut grass & a beautiful, sunshiny morning, when the sun first peeks through the clouds to welcome the day. In this moment, new life is born. Tropical flowers blooming, the ocean breeze is soothing, and rainbows pierce our skies from one end of the island to the other. All in all, Autumn has a special significance to me. Autumn has always been about growth & appreciation. Personal growth from life's hardships & pain throughout our lives, represented by the raindrops, but through the storm, makes way for new life & new beginnings, signified by the blooming of our island's most breathtaking floras. Coincidentally, Thanksgiving goes hand in hand with the Autumn season. In the islands, it's always been about family. Autumn is a prelude to Winter, which has always been a time of coming together as a family. Appreciating the goodness in life, the good people who love you, and the appreciation of life itself. This is the essence of Autumn. Loving, appreciating, and being grateful for all life's little blessings.

Today, I would like to ask you to take a moment for yourself and reflect on this year, and take note of all the little things YOU are grateful for in your life. Go ahead.. make a list. :) A list to always remind yourself why YOU are happy to be alive. Happy Autumn/Fall everyone! :)

Aloha from the islands of Hawaii,

Random Inspiration of the Month: October 2010

Hope you like our fresh, new blog layout! :)

Here's some random, yet positive food for thought that I've manage to stumble upon while browsing the depths of cyberspace. I've been finding myself less inspired these days, and was in dire need of a little inspiration. Decided that I will try to keep up with the monthly "food for thought" theme to try to inspire myself and hopefully you too.

..and VOILA! :)
Cheered me up a bit, hope this inspires someone, somewhere out there...

Photography related updates: we apologize if we haven't been updating our blog and websites lately, since we have been busy moving this month! We are hoping to wrap everything up next week. We have a couple of scheduled photo sessions at the end of October, so we are really looking forward to the upcoming vintage & fashion sessions coming up, stay tuned! :)

Hawaii remembers 9/11

Taken at Camp Smith, Hawaii.. as a flag is flown peacefully in solitude. Hawaii remembers 9/11.

Sabella V. Photography will take a moment of silence, alongside many others, to remember and give our respects, as we honor those who perished on 9/11.
Our prayers go out to their families & friends. God-bless.

“Time is passing. Yet, for the United States of America, there will be no forgetting September the 11th. We will remember every rescuer who died in honor. We will remember every family that lives in grief."
